May 17, Col 1:16 Bible Study Notes
Welcome!
This blog is used to share some of our notes from each day’s journaling while we were in Bible study with The Holy Spirit. At the bottom of each blog page, you’ll see which Bible we used and additional resources that may have informed our thinking and learning. We are curious and humble #Biblenerds. Each day we GET TO use the Word of God to learn more about His never-changing character, how much Jesus loves us and how The Holy Spirit guides us through a heart transformation one verse at a time. The Bible reads us just as much as we read It.
We hope these perfectly imperfect notes help you as you join us weekday mornings 8:00 - 9:00 EST via Facebook & Youtube. And, of course, we welcome you whenever and wherever you get a chance to learn along with us!
In His Love,
Joy Lee & Tara Ouellette
Joy’s Notes:
Col 1:16
“For IN him ALL THINGS were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; ALL THINGS have been created THROUGH him and FOR him.”
———
“A L L things were & have been created:
IN
THROUGH
FOR ...... Jesus
But do we really live as if we believed this???
Jer 23:24 “Can anyone hide from me in the secret place? Am I not everywhere and all the heavens and earth?” Says the Lord”
Ms. Claire (from the wedding reception I attended) — “we call ourselves BLESSED, but we’re not blessed, we’re “SPOILED.”
(* a SPOILED person can’t see that IN, THRU, FOR him all things are created) but a “BLESSED” person can
Def of spoiled =
“a person, especially a child, harmed in character by being treated too leniently or indulgently.
AND...
“Having become unfit for eating.”
—————
WE ARE “BLESSED” WHEN:
I am poor in spirit
I realize my need for God
I am mourning
I am humble
I hunger and thirst for righteousness
I am merciful
My heart is pure
I work for peace
I am persecuted for doing right
I am mocked
I am lied about
I have evil things said about me
👉Big difference of blessed & spoiled
JER 24:1-8
“The Lord gave me this vision:
I saw 2 baskets of figs placed in front of the Lords temple in Jerusalem.
One basket was filled with fresh figs while the other was filled with spoiled figs that was too rotten to eat.
Then the Lord said to me, what do you see Jeremiah? I replied, Figgs, some very good, and some very spoiled & too rotten to eat.
Then the Lord gave me this message:
👉the good figs represent the exiles I sent from Judah to the land of the Babylonians. I will:
watch over and
care for them and
I will bring them back here again.
I will build them up and not tear them down.
I will plant them and not uproot them.
I will give them hearts that recognize me as the Lord!
They will be my people and I will be there God, for they will return to me wholeheartedly!
👉But the spoiled figs represents all the people who have STAYED in Jerusalem (disobedience ) and those who RAN BACK live in Egypt!”
SPOILED FRUIT:
= 1. stayed, when God wanted them to leave (disobedience.) 2. ran back to Egypt (back to old counterfeit comforts)
GOOD (BLESSED) FRUIT: = God USED the captivity to refine the exiles & they RECOGNIZED God as their Lord 🙌
Commentary:
“We may assume we are blessed when life goes well and cursed when it does not. But trouble is a blessing when it makes us stronger, and prosperity is a curse if it entices us away from God.”

“How to avoid food spoilage “
(The FRIDGE is my heart plugged into it’s life Source!)
👇
Use thermometers in your refrigerator
(Try to be in the habit of checking the temperature gage inside your refrigerator EVERYday. The sooner you catch rising temperatures, the sooner you can adjust the temperature and save the food.
👉Spiritual temp gage
2. Remove expired or spoiled food.
(throw out anything that's moldy, spoiled or past its expiration date. Gasses on expiring/spoiled foods are released & can cause spoilage to good fruits if too much gas is released.)
👉throw out old-patterns, thoughts, sin, counterfit comforts, gods, etc.
3. Store food in the right parts of your refrigerator.
(Most people know which foods need to be refrigerated. But, not many people realize that certain foods should be stored in certain parts of the refrigerator.
👉Dont just permit & give access to anyone into the sacred parts of your fridge! God is a God of right order & boundaries.
4. Prevent mold growth in the refrigerator.
(Take the time to wash the shelves of your refrigerator with soapy water)
👉Malachi 3;2 God is like, “A strong soap that bleaches clothes.”
5. Prevent freezer-burn. (Always store food in a vacuum-sealed container if planning to freeze it.)
👉Eph 1:13 “...When you believed, you were marked in him with a SEAL, the promised Holy Spirit!”

CLOSING:
— When we no longer recognize that IN, THRU & FOR him, ALL things were created— we’ve gone from a heart condition of being “blessed” to being “spoiled”
Tara’s Notes:
May 17, Colossians 1:16 Journal
Graham Cooke, poverty mindset:
It’s not about economic deficiency. True poverty is the acceptance of meager possibility. A poverty of imagination, deficiency of courage, a dearth in personal vision, a barrenness in the will that keeps you passive and beaten down. Accepting a limitation and being governed by lack. Lack of resources. Not believing there is no provision. Taking no steps of faith.
An abundance mindset is the ability to see the impossible through Jesus in all circumstances. Knowing that all the provisions necessary is one step ahead of the poverty mindset. They take steps of faith. Being defined internally, not externally. Not by external circumstances. Live IN ME and you’ll be inspired in a whole new way. Walk WITH me. Contend with the enemy using the promises of heaven. Warfare reveals our inheritance. Promises has territory attached to them. Defeat is impossible IF we hold on to the belief in the truth that God’s love and ways are impenetrable. BELIEVE in your promises. Believe in Jesus.
NLT
Christ is the one
Through whom God created everything
*
In heaven and earth
He made the things we can see
And the things we can’t see
Kings, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities.
*
Everything has been created
through him and for him
Colossians 1:16, KJV:
"For by him
were all things created,
that are in heaven, and that are in earth,
visible and invisible,
whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers:
all things were created by him, and for him:"
Paul adores Jesus and states that he is the creator of all things. Remember, Paul half of his life hating Jesus.
The Greek construction refers to “in him” and “through him.” Genesis 1:1-3 Creation took place by the power of Jesus the Son as well as the Father and Spirit.
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
All-encompassing nature of Christ’s creative power. Romans 8:37-39
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 1:1-14
The Word Became Flesh
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Col 1:15 “the firstborn of all creation”
NOT the first of many creations, it’s the prōtotokos – authority, pre-eminence, metaphorically the absolute ruler over all creation.
Revelation 22:13, NLT: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.'"
