May 20, Col 1:19 Bible Study Notes

Welcome!

This blog is used to share some of our notes from each day’s journaling while we were in Bible study with The Holy Spirit. At the bottom of each blog page, you’ll see which Bible we used and additional resources that may have informed our thinking and learning. We are curious and humble #Biblenerds. Each day we GET TO use the Word of God to learn more about His never-changing character, how much Jesus loves us and how The Holy Spirit guides us through a heart transformation one verse at a time. The Bible reads us just as much as we read It.

We hope these perfectly imperfect notes help you as you join us weekday mornings 8:00 - 9:00 EST via Facebook & Youtube. And, of course, we welcome you whenever and wherever you get a chance to learn along with us!

In His Love,

Joy Lee & Tara Ouellette

Joy’s Notes:

For God was pleased to have ALL his fullness dwell in him”(Jesus)

Paul is facing the lies that were coming into the Colossian church, that Jesus was not fully God.

JESUS+SOMETHING= ENOUGH

—— these are the type of comments that eventually got Paul killed!

The Jewish people didn’t want to believe that they crucified God!

Mark (WINDS & WAVES)

Mark 1:21 - Jesus teaches with real powerful authority (unlike anyone they’d ever heard)

Mark 1:25 - Jesus Heals a man from an evil spirit.

Mark 1:29- Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law

Mark 1:40- Jesus heals a man with leprosy

Mark 2- Jesus heals a paralyzed man on a mat

Mark 3:1 -Jesus heals a man with a deformed hand

Mark 4- Jesus teaches the multitudes the parable of the farmer scattering seed.

👉MARK 4:35-41

“As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”

So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind, although other boat followed.

But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat and it began to fill with water.

Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up shouting, “teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?“

When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves “silence! Be still”Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.

Then he asked them “why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?”

They asked each other. “Even the winds and the waves obey him.”

👉👉Even after all the proof of miracles & authoritative teaching...

they didn’t really believe Jesus was God-in-full UNTIL they were in a storm —

• Until they were FEARFUL & ANXIOUS

THE WINDS & WAVES OBEYED HIS VOICE.

👉 Because only the One who made the wind and the waves can control the wind and the waves! (Genesis 1:9)

• don’t discount the storms

• you may have heard powerful sermons & seen signs & wonders — but still doubt!!! (just like the disciples & Colossians)

👉 Matt 7:22-23

“ Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. (& you never KNEW ME AS GOD-IN-FULL)

• It’s not until we are IN THE STORM, will we know all Gods fullness dwells in Jesus!

James 1:6

“But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. (James must of been thinking about the Mark story!)

ITS ALL ABOUT

CONTROL:

• Jesus was sleeping!

• No anxiety

• No fear

👉He purposely was giving an example of a person who releases his/her control and has full trust of God while in the storm !!

If we truly believed in the fullness of God in Jesus....

We’d release the PADDLE in exchange for a PILLOW

Seeing miracles & hearing great sermons doesn’t require relinquishing CONTROL like a storm will do!

👉they had to RELEASE their CONTROL because they DID NOT have the option to control winds & waves!!

That’s Gods territory!

👇

He will often allow us to experience circumstances where my control is powerless and I NEED Him

Jesus wants us to RELEASE CONTROL!

Only when we do that will we KNOW Gods fullness dwells in Jesus & He ALONE can be fully trusted!

👉 Jesus purposely took them into a storm—TO:

1. REVEAL THEIR DOUBT &

2. TO REMOVE THEIR CONTROL!

👉CONTROL IS A COPING MECHANISM TO DEAL WITH ANXIETY!

👉Jesus brings His disciples into a “storm” to rid BOTH!!!

• Only when both character defects are absent from my life— will I truly see Gods FULLNESS in Jesus.

👉The storms of LIFE give us an opportunity to see Jesus as God, like NOTHING ELSE CAN!

Job

“Before (when I only saw miracles & heard powerful sermons) I had only known your name, but now (because of the storm) I have seen your face! (GOD’S FULLNESS DWELLING IN JESUS!)

Tara’s Notes":

May 20,  Colossians 1:19

Christ is SUPREME

1:15- Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God, Jesus existed before all creation and is supreme over all creation

1:16 – All things were created through Jesus and for Jesus

1:17 – Jesus is before all things, and in Jesus all things hold together

1:18 – Jesus is the head of the church

1:19 – In Jesus the fullness of God was pleased to dwell

Tara’s NLT “For God in his fullness was pleased to live in Christ,”

God was incredibly happy to step down from the heavens

To live in Christ, among us.

Dwell: permanent resident, to inhabit

God lived among His people in the wilderness. His presence was in the tabernacle. His presence was in the temple.  Yet these were impersonal, a non-human presence

-Then Jesus was the living-temple, the human form of God to dwell among the people.  Through Jesus we all get eternal life with an eternal God.

OT – visitation

NT – habitation

Jesus diety was fused with humanity for all eternity. Jesus is the glorified God

Religion = us reaching up to God

Christian faith = God reaching down to us

-As Christians or followers of Christ  - who is the head of the church body (of believers)  - we now are the temple of God.

Reflective questions:

Jesus, where have I missed you dwelling in my life?

Where have I taken a life for granted? Jesus in flesh.

Where have I focused more on me and less on what you have done for me and what you are doing for me?

Where do I see real life examples of a person dwelling with others to make an impact?

Is this reflected in my life? When in my life have I been pleased to do life with/to “dwell” among others?
