Joy’s Notes on Colossians 2:17

“For these rules are only SHADOWS of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality.”(the REAL shadow)

Following only “rules” (legalism) w/out heart change—adds the lie of SHAME on me!

     

That’s why Satan doesn’t want us to have a relationship, but religion!

      

“Just one more thing I CANT DO!” = shame

Shame casts a dark, gloomy “SHADOW” over our lives (psalm 34:5)

  • “ The moment we come into an agreement with a lie, we invite the atmosphere of darkness to influence our thoughts and values!”

We are FREE from shame. 

But we BELIEVE the lie that shame is our identity!

Shame, for a believer, is an ILLUSION !!!

Shame DEFINITION:

“A painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the conscious feeling of wrong or foolish behavior.”

Satan DOES NOT want you having a KINGDOM MINDSET about humiliation:

  • Gilgal was named by Joshua after they crossed into promise land . Joshua said “today I’ve ROLLED AWAY YOUR SHAME of the slavery of Egypt.”

GILGAL means: “to roll away!!” 

(Move that bus!) there a NEW home waiting for me!

Psalm 34:5

“Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces.”

Luke 13:10-17

“On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years.

She was bent over (we are BENT OVER IN SHAME) and could not straighten up at all. 

When Jesus SAW her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she 

1.  straightened up & 

2.  praised God.”

  • The shame had her bent down w/ face to ground.

Psalm 3:3

“But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.”

Guilt-  sorry, I made mistake 

Shame- sorry, I'm a mistake 

  • Shame:

We will either make me:

  1. Self protect

  2. Self promote (pride is a mask covering root of shame)

  • “Shame is the signature of Satan.”

👉Shame is an identity TAKER. 

👉Jesus is an identity GIVER.

— Adams first two words spoken to God were:

  1. I was afraid

  2. So I hid (SHAME)

  • The enemy comes to steal kill and destroy. And shame is his vehicle to do it

“The enemy knows the voices in your life effect the choices in your life;

  • so he’ll use his native language of shame & deceit to convince you that doing-it-all-right produces a getting-it-all-right relationship with God.

  • But the thing is, right behavior never produces right relationship. “

👉SIGNS OF SHAME:

(Diagnostic)

  • Feeling overly sensitive

  • Withdrawn

  • Anger

  • Feeling unappreciated

  • Feeling used

  • Feeling rejected

  • Feeling like you have little impact

  • Being worried what others think about you (disease to people please)

  • Feeling taken advantage of

  • Wanting to have the last word- always need to be right

  • Not openly & appropriately sharing your thoughts or feelings

  • Being afraid to look inappropriate or stupid

  • Being more worried about failure than doing something immoral

  • Being a perfectionist

  • Feeling like an outsider or that you are different or left out

  • Feeling suspicious- a lack of trust in others

  • Not wanting to be the center of attention

  • Feeling that you can’t be your true self

  • Trying to hide yourself or be inconspicuous

  • Loss of identity

  • Feeling inadequate

  • Feelings of regret

  • Feeling dishonorable

psalm 91

“He will give you REST in His SHADOW” 

Isaiah 51:16

“I have put My words in your mouth and have covered you with the shadow of My hand”

His hand is the SHADOW🙌

My prayer journal— pray Gods hand over family!

  • Psalm 17:8 “You Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings."

APPLE OF EYE: “it refers to the tiny reflection of yourself that you can see in other people’s pupils. To be the apple of someone’s eye clearly means that you are being gazed upon and watched closely by that person. Your very image is dancing in the eyes of that person!”♥️

James 1:17

“…He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.” 

(He’s dependable— He doesn’t change or move)

Acts 5:15

Peter’s SHADOW healed people!

Maybe that shadow you is God’s presence over your life— protecting, providing, comforting, assisting, affirming, dancing, delighting OVER you!
