Genesis 34 Day 1

This is a window into what life looks like when we “flee to tarshish”

🔥🔥It’s extremely difficult to worship God in the place where we’re not supposed to be.

No mention of the name of God in this chapter!

Because this chapter is all about the devils schemes.

This is a story of life without God??

    ⁃    This family was stationed in a place God DID not call them to be in!

    ⁃    satan lures our hearts into places we have no business residing in!

    ⁃    similar to Lot moving to Sodom

    ⁃    Walking in doorway of fear (spirit of fear) always leads to Satan’s playground.

    ⁃    Satan’s playground not only injures me— but all following me!

🔥when a fathers heart is not where it should be— his family suffers

Research shows that when fathers are involved, their children are:

    •    2 times more likely to go to college

    •    80% less likely to spend time in jail

    •    75% less likely to experience teen pregnancy

Children in father-absent homes account for:

    •    71% of all high school dropouts

    •    90% of homeless and runaway children

BUT GOD.. He IS our Father… the perfect Father!

34:1

One day Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, went to visit some of the young women who lived in the area.

Dinah is the only daughter of Jacob (mom is Leah)

    ⁃    Dinah’s a teenager looking to make friends. (13-15 years old)

34: 2 But when the local prince, Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, he saw Dinah, he seized her and raped her.

    1.    Saw

    2.    Seized  (grabbed her)

    3.    Raped

John 10:10

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; BUT I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Rape: “to destroy & strip of its possession.”

34:3 But then he(the prince)  fell in love with her, and he tried to win her AFFECTION with TENDER WORDS.

    ⁃    The PRINCE fell in-love with her?

    ⁃    John 12:31 “(Satan) is the PRINCE of the world

“….tried To win (BE) her AFFECTION”….

    ⁃    satan uses the inordinate affections of the world to speak “tenderly” to us… to “TRAP” us…

“But then they would flatter God with their mouths- (give him lip service) lying to him with their tongues.”

Isaiah 29:13

And so the Lord says, “These people say they are mine. They honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. And their worship of me is nothing but man-made rules learned by habit & rituals & memory.”

34:4 He said to his father, Hamor, “Get me this young girl. I want to marry her.”

    ⁃    it’s all about “me.”

    ⁃    Satan could care less about you…

    ⁃    free will (God only has you as a valuable child- with great respect, dignity & honor- to give you the CHOICE to choose)

    ⁃    Addiction (we can never be addicted to God) your free will is stolen

34:5 Soon Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter, Dinah.

But since his sons were out in the fields herding his livestock, he said nothing until they returned.

    ⁃    he said “nothing”

    ⁃    Jacob chose to be a PASSIVE dad over a PRAYING dad

“the nervous system is overwhelmed by the inability to escape the threat and may move to the freeze response. This is a way of escaping without physically removing the body from the situation.

The freeze response is more common for those that experience a large amount of fear in response to certain stressors.

     👇

A child that suffered from constant anxiety and fear due to trauma; may develop a tendency to freeze in face of danger.

34:6 Hamor, Shechem’s father, came to jacob discuss the matter.

    ⁃    Jacobs “FREEZE” opened up the portal for the enemy to come to him!!!!

34:7 Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the field as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked and furious that their sister had been raped. Shechem had done a disgraceful thing against Jacob’s family, “something that should never be done.”

🔥When GOLIATH was forcing Israelites to fight him… they said: “this is something that should never be done.”

But…..

Goliath was put in David’s path not to defeat him, but to promote him.”

When JUDAS betrayed Jesus & sent him to be whipped, beaten & crucified… they said : “this is something that should never be done.”

BUT….

Judas was put in The 12 not to HARM Jesus, but to DISARM satan.

When JOSEPH was left for dead by his brothers, sold as a slave, wrongly accused of attempted rape & forgotten in prison…. They said: this is something that should never be done.”

     But…..

Gen 50:19-21

“But Joseph replied, don’t be afraid of me. Am I God, that I can PUNISH you?

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for GOOD .

He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people (PROMISE)

No, don’t be afraid. I will continue to take care of you and your children” so he reassured them by speaking kindly to them”

Promise or Payback?

We can’t have both—

    •    Joseph saw their harm towards him NOT as a STUMBLING-BLOCK but a STEPPING STONE

“It may look like a

SET-BACK but it’s a

SET-UP” to fulfill your destiny.

Often we’re too busy cursing them to recognize how God is using them

Bitterness is a cancer to the soul.

FACT: (satan)

“this is something that should never be done.”

TRUTH: (God)

“If God allowed it, He’s going to use it for my good!”

34:8 Hamor tried to speak with Jacob and his sons. “My son Shechem is truly in love with your daughter,” he said. “Please let him marry her.

    •    Here we have the enemy given an opportunity to speak to Jacob BECAUSE Jacob isn’t speaking to God!

    •    you have full permission to FLAT OUT IGNORE satan!

    •    eve— satan lured & lied & manipulated his way in to speaking to her… & because of that conversation— she bit the bait!

34:9 In fact, let’s arrange other marriages, too. You give us your daughters for our sons, and we will give you our daughters for your sons. 10 And you may live among us; the land is open to you! Settle here and trade with us. And feel free to buy property in the area.”

    •    Satan will always have “great” & crafty ideas for your life that oppose the heart of Gods plan on your life

    •    Genesis 3:4-5

You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.””

    ⁃    Homer tries (satan) to intermingle people that have been “set apart” for His special use!”— in order to pollute Gods people!!!

“The LORD had clearly instructed the people of Israel, “You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods.” Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway.”

    ⁃    King Balak(bay-lock)  (of Moab) hired Balaam to curse the Israelites.

But he blesses them 4x🙌

    •    where cursing failed, Balaam knew what would take-down the Israelites:  👇INORDINATE AFFECTIONS with other nations who don’t know God!!!

Moabite women were were sent in to entice the Israelite men (who had Israelite wives)

Numbers 25:1 (https://biblia.com/bible/niv/Num%2025.1) says, “While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate and bowed down before these gods…. And the LORD’S anger burned against them.”

34:11-12 Then Shechem himself spoke to Dinah’s father and brothers. “Please be kind to me, and let me marry her,” he begged. “I will give you whatever you ask. 12 No matter what dowry or gift you demand, I will gladly pay it—just give me the girl as my wife.”

    ⁃    repeated pattern of allowing Satan to have ACCESS to our thinking!!!!

All because Jacob is choosing to be a PASSIVE MAN & not a PRAYING MAN!

34:13 But since Shechem had defiled their sister, Dinah, Jacob’s sons responded deceitfully to Shechem and his father, Hamor.

    •    brothers chose:

Deceitful planning over devoteful praying

Roman’s 12:17-21

    •    “Dear friends, NEVER take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord. Instead, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.” Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.”

(I’m allowing evil to CONQUER ME- when I “take revenge.” )

34:14 They said to them, “We couldn’t possibly allow this, because you’re not circumcised. It would be a disgrace for our sister to marry a man like you!

    •    Jacobs sons are engaging in the generational deceit & MANIPULATION they’ve seen their father do

    •    USING SATANS TOOLS TO FIGHT EVIL:(

34:15-17 But here is a solution. If every man among you will be circumcised like we are, 16 then we will give you our daughters, and we’ll take your daughters for ourselves. We will live among you and become one people. 17 But if you don’t agree to be circumcised, we will take her and be on our way.”

    •    instead of PRAYING & seeking Gods face to circumcise these men’s hearts— they use demonic weapons to deceive them to circumcise the flesh

Satan does that with us too:

Convincing us to engage in Behavior modification vs. heart transformation!

    •    Romans 2:29

“And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by the Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people.”

    •    Jer 4:4

“…circumcise your hearts before the LORD, or my anger will burn like an unquenchable fire because of all your sins.”

34:18 Hamor and his son Shechem agreed to their proposal.

    •    Behavior modification seems easier, cleaner, faster, simpler…. Than heart transformation!!

35: 19 Shechem wasted no time in acting on this request, for he wanted Jacob’s daughter DESPERATELY. Shechem was a highly respected member of his family,

“It is a characteristic of wisdom NOT to do desperate things.”

    •    what do you desire DESPERATELY (outside of God) that could be blocking the wisdom of Gods direction & plan on your life???

Surrender it.🤲

AND ask God to get to the ROOT of “why” you desperately want this thing, person….

34:20 and he went with his father, Hamor, to present this proposal to the leaders at the town gate.

21 “These men are our friends,” they said. “Let’s invite them to live here among us and trade freely. Look, the land is large enough to hold them. We can take their daughters as wives and let them marry ours.

22 But they will consider staying here and becoming one people with us only if all of our men are circumcised, just as they are.

23 But if we do this, all their livestock and possessions will eventually be ours. Come, let’s agree to their terms and let them settle here among us.”

    •    🔥Because of being enveloped in FLESHLY DESPERATION— they’re like sheep being led to the slaughter!

34:24 So all the men in the town council agreed with Hamor and Shechem, and every male in the town was circumcised.

25 But three days later, when their wounds were still sore, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, who were Dinah’s full brothers, took their swords and entered the town without opposition. Then they slaughtered every male there,

26 including Hamor and his son Shechem. They killed them with their swords, then took Dinah from Shechem’s house and returned to their camp.

    ⁃    Dinah was in shechems house???

    ⁃    Jacob had to of let them take her:(

27 Meanwhile, the rest of Jacob’s sons arrived. Finding the men slaughtered, they plundered the town because their sister had been defiled there.

28 They seized all the flocks and herds and donkeys—everything they could lay their hands on, both inside the town and outside in the fields.

29 They looted all their wealth and plundered their houses. They also took all their little children and wives and led them away as captives.

30 Afterward Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have ruined me! You’ve made me stink among all the people of this land—among all the Canaanites and Perizzites. We are so few that they will join forces and crush us. I will be ruined, and my entire household will be wiped out!”

    •    when we choose human-retaliation over Godly-vindication …..

Galatians 6:7–9

A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up!”

34:31 “But why should we let him treat our sister like a prostitute?” they retorted angrily.

James 1:20

“Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.”

    •    anger secondary emotion

    •    They’re reacting out of anger — through payback action—  instead of giving God the TRUE e

motional pain & allowing him to heal root!
