May 6, Colossians 1:9 Bible Study Notes

Welcome!

This blog is used to share some of our notes from each day’s journaling while we were in Bible study with The Holy Spirit. At the bottom of each blog page, you’ll see which Bible we used and additional resources that may have informed our thinking and learning. We are curious and humble #Biblenerds. Each day we GET TO use the Word of God to learn more about His never-changing character, how much Jesus loves us and how The Holy Spirit guides us through a heart transformation one verse at a time. The Bible reads us just as much as we read It.

We hope these perfectly imperfect notes help you as you join us weekday mornings 8:00 - 9:00 EST via Facebook & Youtube. And, of course, we welcome you whenever and wherever you get a chance to learn along with us!

In His Love,

#2. “We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will “

Jer 33:3

“Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come.”

— the calling isn’t in the DOING but in the BEING.

— The “doing” is simply the fruits of our calling.

We have an ASSIGNMENT to fulfill— but that’s not “YOUR WILL”

— that’s the natural outpouring of your heart that loves God with ALL your heart, mind, soul.

Our purpose:

Focus more on BEING & less on DOING

Our will isn’t BEHAVIOR!

It’s a heart posture of HUMILITY that leads to

LOVE that leads to REVERENCE that leads to OBEDIENCE that leads PURPOSE 🙌

There will be an urgency in your bones to do what God called you to do!

— You won’t be able to sleep, think, operate, without doing what God has called you to do, when you are in his well!

  • God asked ELIJA & widow for their one can of flour & oil left & God alone multiplied it to overflow

  • God asked the young boy to bring his 5 loaves & 2 fish to feed 5000+ people— & God multiplied it.

Where our own limitations are found & given to God, He multiplies & does exceedingly above & beyond!

Tara’s May 6 Journal entry:

Goooooooooood morning, Father!  Today is YOUR day.  Have your way.  I stand in victory with you by my side.  We got this! Let’s go!!!!

March 22 Devo:  The Burning Heart “Did not our heart burn within us…?”

Luke 24:32

The secret of the burning heart = abiding in Jesus in a way that honors the power within us.  Wow!  It’s as if OC is speaking right to me and to many conversations I’ve had lately.

*It’s so much less about our sin, and more about not knowing/studying/honoring our own natural laws.

Ex: my emotion.  Examine what the final outcome of this particular emotion is going to be.  Where is it taking me? What are the logical conclusions/possibilities?  OC asks, “Is it something God would condemn?  Then STOP that train of thought/emotional path immediately!

#BUTGOD.  If it’s an emotion kindled by the Spirit of God and you don’t allow it to have its way in your life, it will cause a reaction on a lower level that God intended.

This is very real for me right now: “If the Spirit of God has stirred you, make as many of your decisions as possible IRREVOCABLE and let the consequences be what they will. We must obey the light we received there; we must put it into action.

When God gives you a vision, we must transact business with Him at that point, no matter what the cost!

Luke On the Road to Emmaus

13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them16 but they were kept from recognizing him.

17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”

They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

19 “What things?” he asked.

“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”

25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. (Tara’s thoughts: No Bible in hand, but still sharing Scripture.)

28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”  (Tara’s notes: after seeing through a new perspective, the realized that their hearts felt the truth “burned within” WHILE Jesus shared Scripture!)

Col 1:9

For this reason, since the day we heard about you,

we have not stopped praying for you.

We continually ask God to

fill you with the knowledge of his will

through all the wisdom and understanding

that the Spirit gives

1.     Prayer: asking God to…

2.     Knowledge of his will

3.     The Spirit gives the wisdom, not man & not this world

Philippians 4:5 – 7

Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This is what you shared with me yesterday, God.  That when we see this tough circumstance as a “blessing” (beatitude) I can be gentle and not anxious. I come from a place of victory KNOWING you – your peace – which WILL transcend my soul: mind, will, emotions.  Through thankful prayer & petitioning I not only will HOPE in the Lord that the one I’m praying for will receive Your Spiritual wisdom, but will all will receive PEACE that will guard my heart and mind.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Your kingdom come, your will be done (on earth as it is in heaven).

We can’t connect with the Spirit through our soul: mind, will, emotions.  It’s through our spirit.  Walking with the Spirit.  The Oneness.  (Just like I “coincidentally” first read in the devo!)

 Most likely:

*It won’t make sense

*You will be afraid

*You will be mocked

*It will go against the grain

*It will glorify God

*You will be a “person of peace”

Following the breadcrumbs the Holy Spirit is leaving for me this morning.  I felt prompted to look up past learning from Mike Breen’s work with his 3DM team: Building a Discipling Culture.

https://mikebreen.wordpress.com/2010/11/24/understanding-jesus-and-persons-of-peace/

I was not only reminded about this term he uses “person of peace,” but Mike shared a verse that seems applicable even for today’s verse Col 1:9.

 Luke 19:1-10

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

19 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing throughA man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.

When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”

Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
