Genesis 19 1-11
Story began long before this chapter ….
… it started in Gen11

Lot experienced great loss at early age—
• BOTH PARENTS to lot die at early age.
As a result— Lot had an emptiness in his heart that he thought could be filled from an outside person, place, thing.

⁃ orphan mentality lies to me about:
1. Who I am (Shame)
2. Who God is (favoritism)
ORPHAN MENTALITY:

• Striving
• straining
• Shame
• Comparison
• Jealousy
• Control
• Hoarding
• Outcome/results

ADOPTED MENTALITY:
FUNCTIONS IN:
• abiding
• Safety
• Security
• Stillness
• Holding things of world loosely
• Identity
⁃ Lot lived like an orphan- wanted the “best land” in fear he wouldn’t get it.
⁃ Abraham knew if lot got a good piece of property, God had more for him too- & so he told lot to have first choice on whatever land he wanted. And of course God blessed Abraham mightily.
Every human heart has 4 basic needs: Seen, soothed, safe, secure (Dr. Curt Thompson)
• lot chose the “lusher” grounds— & leaned on his own understanding & didn’t ask God for His!

Gen 13:10-13
“lot (1.) LOOKED & saw that the area of Sodim was well-watered. So (2. ) HE CHOSE for himself the whole plain of the Jordan (sodom & Gomorrah) (3.) The two men parted. Abram loved in Canaan while Lot pitched TENT— NEAR Sodom.
Lot:
1. Lot had an emptiness & longing in his heart to be SEEN, SOOTHED, SAFE, SECURE (ch.11)
2. Looked longingly at Sodom (desired it) (ch.13)
3. Chose with own understanding (didn’t ask God His plan)
4. Pitched tent “NEAR”
⁃ “it begins with a distorted BELIEF (orphan mentality)
⁃ The BELIEF becomes a thought.
⁃ The thought becomes a consideration.
⁃ The consideration becomes an emotion,
⁃ The emotion becomes an action.
⁃ The Action repeated becomes a habit,
⁃ The habit establishes a stronghold.”
(Begins with a BELIEF and ends in a STRONHOLD)

Ezekiel 16:49-50 (NIV)
“‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodim: She and her daughters were:
1. arrogant (prideful)
2. overfed (glutinous)
3. unconcerned; (they did not help the poor and needy. )
4. haughty
5. did detestable things before me. …Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.”
(Very OPPOSITE of Kingdom life!!👇)

Gen 19:1
“That evening the two angels came to the entrance of the city of Sodom. Lot was sitting there at city gate and when he saw them, he stood up to meet them. Then he welcomed them and bowed with his face to the ground.”
• lot was a “prominent figure” in this city to be able to sit at the gate of the city!
• A large public square to conduct governmental business.
ANGELS:
• 2 men go to Sodim
⁃ Angels are mentioned in 34 books of the Bible
⁃ 17 Books of OT & 17 books of NT
⁃ 100+ OT mentions angels
⁃ 160+ NT mentions
• “ angels are ministering spirits sent out to serve those who will inherit salvation.” (Heb 1:14)
• They’re spiritual beings, not of flesh and blood— sometimes appear as human. (Heb 13:2, Luke 24:39)
Heb 13:2
“some people have entertained angels without knowing it.”

Gen 19:2
“My lords,” he said, “come to my HOUSE to wash your feet, and be my guests for the night. You may then get up early in the morning and be on your way again.”
“Oh no,” they replied. “We’ll just spend the night out here in the city square.”
• Lot is living in a HOUSE and no longer a tent!!
⁃ Abraham continues to live in a TENT— he knows he’s not a citizen of earth, but of heaven (A PILGRIM)

⁃ 1 Peter 2:1 “I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.”

⁃ Lot’s become a citizen of the world empire (A CITIZEN)

Heb 11:8
“It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going. And even when he reached the land God promised him, he lived there by faith—for he was like a foreigner, living in tents. And so did Isaac and Jacob, who inherited the same promise. Abraham was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, a city designed and built by God.”

Gen 19:3
“But Lot insisted, so at last they went home with him. Lot prepared a feast for them, complete with fresh bread made without yeast, and they ate.”
• why did Lot make bread without yeast?

• exodus 12 - Israelites made bread without yeast, to show they were EXITING QUICKLY from: WHAT-WAS to NOT-YET (slavery to freedom)
• this is a prophetic insight into the QUICK departure lot will have from this place of bondage!!!
• A mirror of EGYPT!!

Gen 19:4-5
“But before they retired for the night, ALL the men of Sodom, young and old, came from all over the city and surrounded the house. They shouted to Lot, “Where are the men who came to spend the night with you? Bring them out to us so we can have (relations) sex with them!”
(“All the men” = sin is contagious)
When we don’t know our God is HOLY-
we won’t know our bodies are too.

“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?”
• Lust places the conscience in a deep sleep & gives us a DEPRAVED MIND (Romans 1:28)

Lust begins with a legitimate need, thats met through illegitimate means.
👉 God given.
👉 satan polluted.
anytime we place someone/something else on Gods throne— it’s immediately perverted. (& lust can be birthed)
👉Lust promises just a sample - but produces a stronghold.
👉 the deep root of lust is often emptiness.
👉 Lust- can never be satisfied (that’s the crazy cycle)
⁃ it has a snowball effect! it grows and multiplies!!
⁃ Sin wants to OWN/ master YOU!
DOPAMINE- neurochemical release that gives pleasure.
DOPAMINE- bonds you to the person, place, thing you experienced this “feel-good” release with.
Roman’s 12:2
“Do not conform to the PATTERN of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.“
Moses- received the PATTERN on the mountain top!!

• “It’s not the PERSON we’re lusting- but the need for acceptance/affection
• it’s not the sexual experience we’re lusting— but the need for connection
• It’s not the MONEY- but the need for security
• It’s not the FOOD- but the need for comfort
• It’s not the job- but the need for safety
• It’s not the success - but the need for worthiness.
• it’s not the trophy- but the need to be seen.
• It’s not the alcohol— but the need to be soothed.
• it’s not the perfectionism - but the need for control.
Satan ALWAYS offers a counterfeit method to every human basic need!
• And EVERY counterfeit method leads to death :(
Romans 6:13
“ do not offer any part of yourself to sin, as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.
For sin is no longer your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace!”

Gen 19:6-8
“So Lot stepped outside to talk to them, shutting the door behind him. “Please, my brothers,” he begged, “don’t do such a wicked thing. “Look, I have two virgin daughters. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do with them as you wish. But please, leave these men alone, for they are my guests and are under my protection.”
• lot fights his sexual battles by CLOSING THE DOOR on God— & reasoning with the devil himself?!
⁃ NEVER Reason with a murderer
⁃ He does NOT reason!
“FLEE from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does!”
(1 cor 6:18)
• Lot tries to save the Angels from darkness, but doesn’t realize angels are there to save HIM from darkness!!!

Our own bargaining, efforts, striving, trying, reasoning, negotiating, attempts, control, manipulation, WORKS, rules, tactics WILL NOT work against fighting Satan’s ways.
—> we NEED Jesus!!!
• Don’t close the door on God— in the face of sin 👉 open it!!
⁃ “if you’re experiencing spiritual warfare it’s not because you have a DEMON, but because you have a DESTINY!”
Lot offers his daughters to men👇
⁃ In this culture, women were just one step higher than a slave.
⁃ They were something that you OWN!
BUT JESUS FLIPPED SCRIPT ON THIS!!
⁃ first rabbi to use women in parables
⁃ Martha sitting at feet (meant she was a disciple)
⁃ Mary Magdalene— first Christian/evangelist
⁃ Woman at the well
⁃ Woman being stoned
⁃ Woman with blood issue
JESUS ELEVATED THE WOMAN!
• Lot has lost his “moral compass”
• 👉”Don’t be so affected that you’re no longer effective - making you now ineffective.”

Gen 19:9-11
“Stand back!” they shouted. “This fellow came to town as an outsider, and now he’s acting like our judge! We’ll treat you far worse than those other men!” And they lunged toward Lot to break down the door. But the two angels reached out, pulled Lot (Gods rescue mission) into the house, and BOLTED THE DOOR (Isaiah 22:22 “When he opens doors, no one will be able to close them; when he closes doors, no one will be able to open them.”)
Then they blinded all the men, young and old, who were at the door of the house, so they gave up trying to get inside.”
• In Gen. 19:6= Lot closes door
• In Gen. 19:10= God closes door 🙌
GOD:
1. Closes the door (protector)
2. Blinds the enemy (defender)
He’ll do the same in your life!!

(God opened eyes of Elisha’s servant) &
“As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, “Strike this army with blindness.” So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked.

• Angels strength: Angels are mighty warriors of God!
• 2 kings 19:35 tells us— “That night the angel of the LORD (https://bibleask.org/who-is-the-angel-of-the-lord/amp/) went out and put to death (https://bibleask.org/how-does-the-bible-refer-to-death/amp/) 185,000 men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning–they were all dead!

When we let God shut the door — the enemy gives up trying to get inside! He knows he’s been overpowered!
