May 11, Colossians 1:12 Bible Study Notes

Welcome!

This blog is used to share some of our notes from each day’s journaling while we were in Bible study with The Holy Spirit. At the bottom of each blog page, you’ll see which Bible we used and additional resources that may have informed our thinking and learning. We are curious and humble #Biblenerds. Each day we GET TO use the Word of God to learn more about His never-changing character, how much Jesus loves us and how The Holy Spirit guides us through a heart transformation one verse at a time. The Bible reads us just as much as we read It.

We hope these perfectly imperfect notes help you as you join us weekday mornings 8:00 - 9:00 EST via Facebook & Youtube. And, of course, we welcome you whenever and wherever you get a chance to learn along with us!

In His Love,

Tara’s May 11, Colossians 1:12 Notes:

Always thanking the Father,

Who has enabled you to share the inheritance

That belongs to God’s holy people,

Who live in the light.

1.     ALWAYS thanking the Father

a.     For Him, His ways, His will

b.     For things I cannot see BUT still believe in

c.      For this very situation that He will NOT waste!

d.     Other -

2.     Enabled access to inheritance

a.     Enabled – not b/c of ME, but b/c of HIM

b.     Share – there’s enough for everyone! Do I believe this?  Or it’s only for THAT type of person/Christian.

c.      à Which leads to a scarcity or abundance mindset

d.     ENHERITE:  receive (money, property, or a title) as an heir at the death of the previous holder.  Jesus, my Lord, DIED for ME to have this abundant life.

e.     “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch” usually used in negative statements to mean that someone should not depend on something hoped for until he or she knows for certain that it will happen.

                                                    i.     Ex: of a person from a wealthy family who knows that when their grandparent dies, they will receive an inheritance so spent before received.  KNOWING the heart and the ways of their family.

3.     that belongs to ME, b/c I live in the light:  Do I LIVE in the light? Do I visit?  Is it conditional? If so, what is it based on?

We have been adopted into His family. Assured an inheritance

Romans 8:17 “Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory”

Living in the light doesn’t appeal to some people.  Heaven won’t be appreciated.

When we understand and value the glory that awaits us, we are better able to endure whatever comes our way in this life. We can give God praise even during trials because we have His guarantee that we will receive all He has promised: "For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all" (2 Corinthians 4:17).

Revelation 21:4 gives us a brief but beautiful description of our inheritance:

"‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

God and man will dwell together.

Everything will be made new.

The bejeweled city, New Jerusalem, will be our residence.

The river of life will issue from God’s throne.

The healing tree of life with twelve kinds of fruit will grow there, too. T

here will be no night there, because the eternal light of the Lamb will fill the new heaven and new earth and shine upon all the heirs of God.

David writes, "Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; / you make my lot secure. / The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; / surely I have a delightful inheritance" (Psalm 16:5–6).

And that is why "we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:18).

Journal reflections:

What do I believe I’m inheriting?

Out of curiosity, I’ll imagine for a moment that I’m about to accept an inheritance and it’s everything that I would need to get through life in an abundant way.  What would that look like?

Good genetics? My family and I would never get sick or a bad illness. Healthy, long life.

Money? I would have all the money needed for the life my family needed.  Would never have to worry about bills, college, safe home/neighborhood for generations to come. SECURITY

People? I would have a family that was my community and support system.

What do I believe I’m inheriting from heaven?

Eternal life: I will never die.

No corruption, no deceit, no weakness can touch.

Rev 21:5 “I am making everything new.” Colors that never fade, value that never depreciates, never diminishes

Safe, sturdy home with a solid foundation and the best architecture.

Best return on investment!

Security: John 17:11 “Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name.” We are guarded by the almighty himself.  Can’t be harmed!  Can’t be stolen.  Can’t be killed.  Can’t be destroyed.
